Sunglade Comfort Mouth Bits for Horses

Picture
At horse events we often see horses gaping their mouths ... why?

The common denominator in most is a broken mouth piece snaffle. We have not used those bits in over 15 years at Sunglade Ranch. This is an x-ray picture so you know what we mean. The more pressure you put on these bits, the more they dig into your horse's pallet.  If your horse is gaping, showing resistance and throwing its head and you are using a broken mouth piece bit, your horse is trying to tell you that you are hurting its mouth.
Below is a picture of both a comfort mouth ring snaffle and the shanked model. Note the barrel in the middle which prevents the bit from collapsing together in a "nutcraker motion" like a broken mouth peice AND the forward curve for tonque relief.

These bits, coupled with soft hands, can be the answer to behavior problems in your horse!

Shank Comfort Mouth Bit

Our new Ring Comfort Mouth Bit is heavier weight German Stainless for a softer feel in the hand and for the horse. It also has a shorter barrel for more flexibility and thicker mouth piece with a gentle curve for even less pressure on the bars.

Soft Hands Demonstration

I've had a lot of inquiries about what I consider "good hand position" and "soft hands". So I looked through some old pics and found these of a nice CHICS IN THE MALE two year old daughter. I started using the ring version of the Sunglade Comfort Mouth Snaffle. This is about the 10th ride. Please note the CLOSED mouth, the happy expression, the soft fingers, the LOW hand position....(if I had known I was going to post these pics I would have worn a nicer pair of jeans!)  Also, I've included a picture of myself with CHICS IN THE MALE at 17 years young... note the loose rein, soft mouth and low hand position. I am using the shanked version of the Sunglade Comfort Mouth Snaffle.

Some words from a happy customer:

A year ago at a horse event in Saskatoon, Sk (Equine Expo) I purchased a bit from a from this vendor who told me that the bits made horses’ mouths happy.  I bought one, (Ring Comfort Mouth bit).  I used it with my mare and thought nothing more of it, after all to me a bit is a bit.  This year I switched bits and put a D bit on my bridle, thinking nothing would be different.  Much to my surprise my horse started mouthing with the bit.  I thought, “did I have the bridle too tight.  Is her tongue under the bit”.  No, none of these was the cause.  I switched back to the Ring Comfort Mouth bit and had a happy horse again.  We now have enjoyable rides.

Thank you, Lynne from Sunglade Ranch  Ltd for introducing me to this very comfortable bit for my horse.

The bits come in both English and Western styles.  I have ordered another bit because I now have another horse (recently purchased) who has poor teeth and I’m  sure will benefit from this gentle in the mouth bit.  I will try it on my horse when it comes and let you know how it goes.

Let's all remember Lynne's favorite prayer when we are interacting with our horses....

Horseman's Prayer

Dearest God in Heaven
Give me strength to guide my horse
Make my hands soft and my head clear
Let me horse understand me and I him,
My heart you have blessed with a special love of these animals,
Let me never lose sight of it.
My soul you have gifted with a deep need for them.
As the sun gleams on an elegant head,
Always may my throat tighten at the sound of a gentle nicker.
Let the scent of fresh hay and a new bag of grain always be sweet to me.
Let the touch of a warm nose on my hand always bring a smile.
I adore the joy of a warm day on the farm.
The grace and splendor of a running horse,
The thunder of it’s hooves makes my eyes burn and my heart soar.
Let it always be so.
Dearest God grant me patience, for horses are harnessed wind
And wind can be flighty,.
Let me not frighten or harm them
Instead show me ways to understand them.
Above all, Dear God, fill my life with them.
When I pass from this world, send my soul to no heaven without them.
For this love you have given me graces my existence.
I shall cherish it and praise you for it all the days of my life.
Amen.
